After obtaining a General Diploma in Law in Paris, Chloé De Backer trained at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London where she went on to complete the Opera Course. In 2004 she spent a semester at the Karlsruhe Musikhochschule in Germany.
Whilst at the Guildhall she performed the roles of Cherubino Le Nozze di Figaro, Clairon Capriccio, La Ciesca Gianni Schicchi, Mrs Kneebone A Dinner Engagement and Genevieve The Long Christmas Dinner and covered the roles of Frugola Il Tabarro, Meg Page Falstaff and Genevieve The Little Green Swallow. During this period she also performed the title role in La Périchole for the Festival de Venelles and Hélène Une éducation manquée for the Festival D’Auray.
In 2007 she was awarded a place at the International Opera Studio in Zürich, under the supervision of Francisco Araiza. Her roles at the Studio included Madame Larina Eugine Onegin and Countess Der Wildschütz. As a principal with Zürich Opera she sang The Fox Kinderfüchslein and roles in Peer Gynt and Humperdinck’s Königskinder, conducted by Ingo Metzmacher.
Since returning from Zürich, Chloé has worked for Scottish Opera, covering Javotte in Manon and touring as part of the ESO series, as well as two seasons in the Glyndebourne Chorus and two productions for Raymond Gubbay at the Royal Albert Hall. In 2011 she covered Zaida Il Turco in Italia for Garsington Opera, and returned the following year to cover Berginella La Périchole. Last autumn Chloé sang Vespetta in Albinoni’s Vespetta e Pimpinone for New European Opera in France and will return to Nantes in April for further performances.
In 2011 Chloé performed the role of Mercedes in Carmen in a new production directed by Gianni Quaranta for the inaugural season of the Royal Opera House, Muscat, Oman and has just finished a run of performances of the same role for Raymond Gubbay at the Royal Albert Hall.
